About Creepy Crawlies in the Vegetables
Cool! Free protein!
Oops, sorry! For a lot of people in the world, the most protein they get comes with the vegetables or fruit, but for us overly sanitized Americans, we shudder at the thought of anything fauna coming into contact with anything flora.
So here's the thing. Unless the vegetables or fruit is heavily sprayed with POISON or grown in controlled conditions (meaning it never sees the actual sunshine) it's gonna have animal matter somewhere on it. So, right here, stop, go back to the section on Basic Kitchen Safety and read the first point. I'll wait .....
We don't use poison on our plants any more than absolutely necessary. Which is to say hardly at all. (We use pesticide only as a last resort: rescue of a crop. And we tell you when we do. Last year we dusted the cabbage. Once. That was the extent of our pesticide use.) And we, strange as it may seem, prefer to eat food that has been kissed by the sun and watered by the rain. That means it may also have been kissed by the rabbits and watered by the coyotes. (Remember that thing about washing? ...)
